We start from the meeting with the official guide in Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie; here we will make a short introduction to Leonardo’s work so as to leave the only 15 minutes available for the visit for a more detailed observation of the masterpiece.

At the end of the introduction you will enter the Refectory of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie with a skip-the-line ticket and you will be able to stay in front of the Cenacolo for a quarter of an hour during which the guide will reveal the secrets of the parietal painting made with a mixed dry technique on plaster between 1494 and 1498 by Leonardo Da Vinci on commission by Ludovico Maria Sforza called “Il Moro” or “Arbitro d’Italia” following the Guicciardini.

– What’s odd about the placement of the painting?
– How have the characters' eyes changed over time?
– How did Leonardo compose the painting and its famous perspective?
– Why is the Upper Room an absolute masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci’s genius?

These are some of the questions that the guide will try to answer during the tour. The painting is a plastic representation of a verse from the Gospel of John (13:21-26):

“When Jesus had said these things, he was deeply moved and said,
- Verily, verily, I say unto you, one of you shall betray me. –
The disciples looked at one another, not knowing of whom he spoke. Now one of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was at table with Jesus. Simon Peter beckoned to him and said:
- Say, who is he to whom he refers?” -
And he, reclining on the breast of Jesus, said unto him,
- Sir, who is it? –
Then Jesus answered:
- He’s the one I’ll dip a bite for and give it to him. –
And when he had dipped the morsel, he took it and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.”

Leonardo’s Last Supper is one of the many representations of the subject, but certainly the most famous and fragile. The humid environmental conditions to which it had been subjected for centuries had almost completely deteriorated it. Only a lengthy restoration – from 1978 to 1999 paid for by Olivetti – made it possible to recover the painting and reveal the original colours chosen by Leonardo.

However, the fragility of the painting remains intact, so the Mystery of Cultural Heritage limits the visits to a limited time.

Despite the restrictions imposed to protect the work, the Cenacolo Vinciano does not leave the list of the most visited Italian museums every year.

The work of the Cenacle was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.

The tour is multilingual and available in 2 languages: English and Italian.
